Applications for the EMT-B eligibility list must attach the following certifications to the application to qualify:
High school diploma or GED Current certification as an EMT-Basic - must provide copy of certification Minimum one (1) year BLS experience CPR - must provide copy of certification To receive additional points toward the candidate's score, he/she must attach:
Hazmat Ops EVOC MFRI Rescue Courses (up to 4 points possible) Valid US Armed Service veteran - include honorable military service information in the Employment History section of the application and include a copy of DD-214 Candidates who complete the application and attach copies of their certifications successfully, will be invited to take the written exam (dates TBD).
There are no make-up dates for the written exam.
Qualified applicants will be notified if they are eligible to take the written exam.
In preparation for taking the exam, you can visit for exam preparation materials.
This counts for 30% of your final score.
Those who successfully pass the written exam will be invited to take the physical agility test (PAT).
Eligible candidates will be notified of the available dates, times, and location.
If you have successfully completed the PAT with another jurisdiction within the last year, please attach your certification to your application.

Candidates who successfully pass the physical agility test (PAT) will sit before a panel to complete a Skills/Oral exam, available dates, times and location will be provided.

Once the Skills/Oral exam is successfully completed, those that passed will sit for a panel interview, available dates, times and location will be provided.
This counts for 40% of your final score.
Once the interview process has concluded, your cumulative scores from each step in the process will determine your final score, which will then determine if you've made it on to the eligibility list.
Once the eligibility list is finalized, you will receive an email with your placement on the list and the next steps.
The eligibility list is good for 1 year and as positions become vacant, you will be updated on your placement on the list.
This is skilled specialized work as a Maryland certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT).
Accountable for responding to all assigned calls for assistance in the most appropriate and efficient manner, providing the highest standard of patient care while providing a safe and hazard-free environment, under the direction of the Chief of Emergency Medical Services.
Contributes to overall patient care in the areas of patient assessment, treatment, packaging and transport.
Some conditions can be handled following general rules and guidelines, while more complicated problems may require assistance from Paramedics or Supervisors.
Required to assist ALS providers when necessary and appropriate.
Interacts throughout the County internally, and with patients and their families externally and interacts with various first responder agencies and healthcare providers, physicians and hospital personnel, externally.
Essential Job Functions Treats individuals who are ill or injured and individuals in an emotionally distressed state in an appropriate manner and according to BLS guidelines.
Performs necessary emergency medical care to ill, injured, or convalescent persons at the site of an incident and en-route to the hospital or other destination as prescribed by MIEMSS.
Stabilizes the condition of the patients and assists in extricating victims from wreckage.
Performs emergency medical and first aid examinations and treatment such as bandaging wounds, control of bleeding, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, insertion of oral and naso-pharyngeal airways.
Provides quality patient care utilizing thorough knowledge and appropriate administration of BLS interventions as outlined by state, county and/or local protocols, and completes detailed patient reports.
Assists ALS providers in direction and assistance to others in general execution of EMS duties; maintenance of apparatus and equipment; and general housekeeping activities.
Performs required inspections to ensure medical supplies are stocked; equipment and apparatus is clean and operational at all times.
Assures that all documentation required by individual Fire/EMS stations, MIEMSS and the EMS Division are accurate and completed in a timely manner, prior to submission.
Participates in post incident analysis with co-workers to point out positive points, assure quality documentation, areas of improvement and to assure adequate skills are maintained.
Participates in approved continuing education training classes, various meetings, and skills review when necessary.
Maintain a strict level of security concerning confidentiality of all information and protected health care information.
Reports to work regularly, on time and dressed appropriately.
Assists other emergency service agencies as required/requested.
Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Education and
Experience:
High school diploma or an acceptable equivalency diploma (GED).
One (1) year of documented experience as a certified Emergency Medical Technician is preferred.
Licenses or Certifications:
Must have and maintain a current, valid driver's license.
Must have and maintain a current license as an Emergency Medical Technician in the State of Maryland.
Must have and maintain current certification in CPR and EVOC.
Haz-Mat Operations preferred, but not required.
Special Requirements/
Qualifications:
An employee in this class must meet the standards set forth in the Charles County Substance Abuse Policy, when hired, and continue to meet the standards while in this class.
Employee is subject to criminal records check.
Pre-employment physical required, and employee may be subject to periodic physical exams.
Volunteer service in Fire & EMS in Charles County may be limited or prohibited during the term of employment.
Employment is contingent upon successfully completing an EMS internship.
Internships will be evaluated within the first one hundred and fifty (150) working hours for release to independent operational status, continued internship, or separation as a probationary employee.
Internships will not exceed three hundred (300) working hours or six (6) months, whichever occurs first.
